Market Drayton, Shropshire — Team Grove is proud to announce the launch of the first and only school-based St John Ambulance unit in the West Midlands, marking a significant step forward in its commitment to community engagement and youth development.

The new unit, which will run as an after-school programme, offers students the opportunity to gain essential first aid skills, leadership experience, and a deeper understanding of public service. This initiative further cements Team Grove’s role as a cornerstone of the Market Drayton community.
The launch event, held on Wednesday evening, was a resounding success. It was attended by a distinguished group of guests including the Mayor of Market Drayton, the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, and the High Sheriff of Shropshire, all of whom praised the initiative for its innovation and impact.
The evening featured a formal opening and presentation led by Mrs Gledhill and Miss Davies, who were thrilled by the turnout. A large number of students and their families attended, showing strong interest in becoming part of the St John family and learning life-saving skills.

“We are incredibly proud to be the first school in the West Midlands to host a St John Ambulance unit,” said Mitch Allsopp, Headteacher of Grove School. “This initiative is about more than just first aid—it’s about empowering our students to serve their community, build confidence, and develop skills that will stay with them for life. It’s a true reflection of Team Grove’s values and our commitment to being an integral part of Market Drayton.”
Students who missed the open evening but are interested in joining the unit are encouraged to speak with Mrs Gledhill or Miss Davies for more information.
The St John Ambulance unit will meet weekly and is open to students across all year groups. Sessions will focus on practical first aid training, emergency response, and community service projects—giving young people the tools to make a real difference both in school and beyond.
